Landmark Trees of India

Overview Image

An Environmental Education Geography Project

Trees are the natural ambassadors for biodiversity. In times of great environmental stresses, we need representatives of Earth's global biodiversity.

Throughout India, countless trees are noted, named, respected, and recognized as individuals.  Simply finding and naming a tree "landmarks" it, and through it we can learn about the natural and human heritage of India and the world.

On this site, you can find printable resources- poster maps, tree profiles-  that can be used as environmental education lessons, a travel guidebook, or edutainment. The tree profiles can be printed together as a book, or individually as an information sheet.  Each tree profile seeks to introduce new branches of knowledge that this individual tree represents: the tree species, taxonomic family, fossil record, human uses, cultural aspects, historical tales, mythology, and geographical setting.

India is a country of superlative population, superlative biodiversity, and superlative environmental degredation. But a strong connection to nature remains, and these trees exemplify that relationship.
So come along for the treequesting, and take a moment to see those trees in the cities and forests as the individual living organisms they are. Give them a name!

Kya aap Hindi likhta hai?
Mai koshish karta hun! Lekin...kripya mujh madad kijiye! Abhee, main sirf toree toree hindi samajta hun. Aur iss qitab se, shayad ek hindi ka qitab ho sakta hai? I'll definitely be needing help translating English into Hindi. And there's many other languages in India as well.

Do you know about the tree at ____?
There are many many interesting trees in India! Do you know of an exceptional specimen that is worth including? Please try using the form here (+) or send me an email. Some trees are famous tourist attractions, and some are anonymously hiding in the forest. I'm especially interested in the forest trees. Finding them will be a challenge, and there are certainly more trees to visit than time to do it in. To get out there and meet these trees, I'll whenever possible connect with local organizations and ecologists. Any logistic help will be appreciated!

Are you/ When are you going to write a book?
Yes. Eventually.

Have you met ____?
There's an amazing abundance of people and organizations involved in forest conservation, environmental education, and related fields. meeting these people could make the difference between a fantastic field visit and an unsuccessful one. If there is someone I should definitely contact, please e-mail me at ydbarnessATgmailDOTcom!

How is this project possible?
Landmark Trees of India is funded by a Fulbright Grant to YD Bar-Ness by the USA Department of State. Official affiliated organization in India is The Energy and Resources Institute. More info at www.fulbright-india.org and www.teriin.org/index.php

How do I open the Google Earth KMZ (or KML) files!?
Google Earth KMZ files collect and organize geographic information, including text and photos. You can see these points on a virtual globe, photo illustrated. It's amazing! You'll need to have Google Earth on your computer, from http://earth.google.com

How do I open the PDF files!?
Adobe PDF files are designed for easy printing and layout. You'll need to download Adode Acrobat Reader from www.adobe.com

I'd like to help.....
Certainly! Do you know of any interesting trees that should be included? Or do you have a suggestion of a person to contact? Can you help with travel logistics or research tasks? I'll definitely need help from people experienced in print layout and Indian language translation. Please e-mail me at ydbarnessATgmailDOTcom!
